VoIP or IP PABX had been widely known around the world. It had been becoming more a standard option comparing to traditional analogue keyphone system. However, how does it differs between each and another?
VoIP also known as Voice over Internet Protocol. Same goes to IP PABX which stands for Internet Protocol Private Automated Branch Exchange. The main definition is using networks as a protocol to transfer voice internally and including incoming calls.
The first main difference that's been most obvious is the infrastructure. IP PABX no longer require messy phone cables (RJ11). In traditional analogue system, users will need to specially pull another phone cables specially dedicated for each tables, these cables will be punched into a krone tag placed inside a DP box before connecting into PABX system. Which is going to be messy arrangement and cost extra in cable pulling. In IP PABX, users will only need to use the network / LAN (local area network) cable or known in RJ45, Cat5e, Cat6 or etc. that was meant for workstations PC internet purpose. In the IP Phone set, its often comes with 2 ethernet ports which first is meant for incoming network from network switches, and the second ethernet ports will act as an network out which will be used to connect to the PC. Resulting IP Phone act similarly like an adapter for network.
In features wise, IP PABX will comes with almost all features that is available in analogue phone system. Of course, as a modern IP PABX system, it will comes with extra features such as:
1. Miss Call - To check missed calls and their phone numbers
2. Address Book - To keep memory of client's contact
3. Auto Attendant - Phone as first point of reception to fasten up process for client to reach desired person
4. Call Recording - To record all or partial calls
5. Conferencing - Multiple persons in same call at the same time
6. Video Calls - To make video calls
7. Softphone connectivity - Can connect to PC or mobile phone as softphone to answer calls anywhere
8. Voicemail to email - Send voicemail to email for recording purpose
9. Connectivity with Branches - Branches or outlet to link into the same PABX system with HQ
Of course, the features are included but not limited to the features above. Features are different as according to brands and model available in the market.
In economical wise, there wouldn't be a huge difference comparing to analogue PABX system. However, this would need to be consulted by your PABX vendor.
IP PABX is preferred by many users nowadays with more possibility and features at the same time reducing cost. Thus, more users are preferring to switch over to VoIP and the network infrastructure seems to be more stable comparing to traditional way. Even when its connecting to IP internet protocol, however, it will usually not depending on internet to make calls.
